1935 CTCo Washington St.Louis Car Co. Pre-PCC (1051-1060 series).
On
23 November 1934 Washington Capital Transit Co. ordered 20 new streamilned
cars from J.G.Brill and St.Louis Car Co. St.Louis Car Co. got orders for
10 of the 20 vehicles and these cars, numbered 1051-1060 and built on
a special “Capital 70” trucks, were delivered in 1935. In 1937 CTCo put
more 45 true PCC cars in service, also built by St.Louis Car Co. and by
1946 the fleet consisted of 489 PCCs. The pre-PCC cars were withdrawn
from service in 1959; only car No. 1053 is now preserved by National Capital
Trolley Museum.

1935 CTCo Washington J.G. Brill pre-PCC (1001-1010 series)
At the end of 1934 Washington’s Capital
Transit Co.ordered 20 new modern cars from J.G.Brill and St.Louis Car
Co. Ten streamliners, built by Brill, arrived in May 1935 and were numbered
1001-1010. The car’s body was built with riveted steel and 97-E1 trucks
were used; car No 1010 was originally equipped with resilent wheels. These
cars were designed for two-man operation but later they were equipped
for one-man operation. New electric blue, tan and grey paint scheme was
also used. All ten cars entered service on Rosslyn-17th and Pennsylvania
Ave.S.E. line. Unfortunately, none of these pre-PCC cars were preserved;
all were sold for scrap in June 1959.
