USA1945/46 Washington Capital Transit Co. St.Louis Car Co. PCC (Job 1647; 1540-1589 series) - original CTCo livery

Capital Transit had ordered 50 additional cars and 12 spare sets of Clark B-2 trucks in June 1944. The new cars were delivered to Washington between November 1945 and February 1946. Second set of standee windows cars had some improvements, such as next car light fitted next to the route number sign on the doorside, modified front sign route numbers, redesigned rear route number sign and redesigned window frames. Cars 1540-1564 had General Electric equipment and cars 1565-1589 were Westinghouse fitted.

The Capital Transit's PCC retrofit program was started in 1947. It inlcluded repaint the PCC fleet in the new Dulux colors introduced with 1465-1589 class and aslo a new distinctive Capital Transit script logo. It was also applied to the 1540-1589 class when repainted. In the later years the dark gray striping was also omitted on most cars. When built, these cars had a dark brown stripe across the beige "V" on front of the car, this was also omitted at the repainting and the configuration of the beige "V" was also changed. In this livery the 1540-1589 class remained in service until 1956 when the D.C. Transit System Inc. (DCTS) took over the Capital Transit's operations.

On August 15th, 1956, D.C. Transit System Inc. (DCTS) took over Capital Transit's operation. The new D.C. Transit logo was applied to the PCC cars. At this time most of the 1540-1589 series cars received a modified rear rain gutter, however some cars remained the original configuration until the end.

USA1945/46 Washington D.C.Transit St.Louis Car Co. PCC (Job 1647; 1540-1589 series) - post-1957 "Flamingo Stripes" livery

On August 15th, 1956, D.C. Transit System Inc. (DCTS) took over Capital Transit's operation and in January 1957 car 1575 was repainted in the new two-tone Mercury Green, white and flamingo (orange) livery. Until 1960, cars 1554, 1556, 1560, 1565-1568, 1573, 1575, 1583-1585, 1587, 1589 received this new attractive paint scheme. However, the end was close and in January 1962 the last streetcar routes in Washington were abandoned. 32 cars of the 1540-1589 series were sold to Tranvias de Barcelona in 1963-64, three went to Leonard's Department Store in Fort Worth, TX in 1962 and car 1540 was preserved at National Capital Trolley Museum.
