USA1930 Twin Coach Model 40TT Trolleybus (CSL Chicago 51-79 series)

ref184.gif (10107 bytes)The trolleybus operation in Chicago was opened on April 17th, 1930, when the 76-Diversey line replaced the streetcar shuttle. 74 new trolley buses were built for Chicago’s route openings in 1930; 43 of them were the Twin Coach 40TTs. It was the electric version of its famous Model 40 gasoline bus and after deliveries to Salt Lake City in 1928/29 (8 coaches) and New Orleans in 1929 (1 coach), Twin was able to produce a large Chicago’s order in 1930. CSL ordered 15 more Twin Coaches in 1931. By 1931, there were 7 trolleybus routes in Chicago and 114 vehicles. All these trolley buses were running in 1940 and all were still in good condition. In 1948 210 new trolleybuses were delivered to the system but original Twin Coaches were withdrawn only in 1957, after 27 years of service.
