1958 Glasgow BUT RETB/1 Trolleybus (Burlingham
B50F body)
Glasgow
not only had the last trolleybus system in Britain to be opened in 1949
but also the last tram to trolleybus conversion. This was route 108 from
Mount Florida to Paisley Road Toll. To operate this route from 15th November
1958 ten BUT RETB/1 trolleybuses with Burlingham 50-seat front-entrance
body were delivered in late 1958, classified TBS12-21. Glasgow had to
obtain special dispensation from the Ministry of Transport to operate
these extra long 10.52 m vehicles. Leyland-designed RETB/1 export chassis
was introduced by BUT in 1948 and Glasgow was unique in receiving these
trolleybuses in Britain. Unfortunately, the city’s entirely post-war system
was completely abandoned in 1967 and these fine vehicles had a tragically
short life. TBS13 was preserved by the Corporation (now in Glasgow Museum
of Transport). A second example, No. TBS21, also survives.
Scale 1:43
Out of Production.
