USA1938/39 Third Avenue Railway System 626-685 series Lightweight Car - original livery

Between 1934 and 1939 the New York City's Third Avenue Railway System shops under management of Slaughter W.Huff undertook construction of a sizeable fleet of new lightweight cars, the most modern group of them was the 626-685 series for use on Manhattan and Bronx routes. First two cars (626 and 627) were built in 1938 and rest of the class in 1939. Their floor plan was reverted to the front entrance/rear exit design. 20 cars of this series (626-645) were built without trolley poles and were assigned primarily on the X-59th Street Crosstown line. The remaining 40 cars (646-685 series) received trolley poles and were assigned to the T-Tremont Avenue and S-Southern Boulevard lines in Bronx. All cars, except 626/627 and 651-655 (they had a regular Brill 77-E trucks) has a modified version of the Brill 77-E trucks with "rubber sandwich" wheels for noise reduction purposes.

USA1938/39 Third Avenue Transit System 626-685 series Lightweight Car - later 40s livery

423-2Under the pressing of the New York City's Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia and with wartime change in top management of the Third Avenue Transit System, that had Victor McQuistion replacing Slaughter Huff, the company finally decided on an all-bus system and in November 1946 the X-59th Street Crosstown line was converted to bus operation and the streetcar operation in Manhattan ended on June 29, 1947. While the Manhattan's Peter Witt style cars were sold to Sao Paulo in 1947, the 626-645 plow cars were fitted with trolley poles and sent to Bronx. Following abandonment of the Bronx lines in August 1948, 42 cars of the 626-685 series were sold to Vienna, Austria and 15 cars to Bombay, India. In the last years of service, the company's paint scheme was simplified again, with minimum use of striping on the sides.
