Australia1933/35 Sydney R-Class Tram (Clyde Eng. Co.; 1738-1932 series)

The R-class was built for Sydney tramway system between 1933 and 1935 by Clyde Engineering Co. There were 195 cars in this series, numbered 1738-1932. New green and cream paint scheme was first introduced with this class. These corridor cars were in some ways never fully accepted into the system because the crews and traveling public for many years had been accustomed to the older crossbench cars; however the R-class was very successful in operation and remained in service until July 1960.

Australia1935 Sydney R-Class Tram No. 1925 - in '1954 Royal Tour livery.

153-1 In 1954 Queen Elizabeth II became the first reigning monarch to tour Australia. The royal visit of 1954 was perhaps the most popular of all royal visits. Aside from being the first tour of a reigning monarch, it was also the first royal tour to Australia for twenty years and its scale was immense. The Queen arrived in Australia in Sydney on 3  February 1954 and departed the country from Fremantle on 1 April. She and the Duke of Edinburgh visited many towns and cities all around the Australia. Sydney R-class car 1925 was painted red and cream for 1954 Royal Tour with small roof mounted crown to enable undeground working to Wynyard and remained in this livery until October 1955.

Australia1950/53 Sydney Commonwealth Engineering Co. R1-class Tram (1988-2087 series).

156 Post-war Sydney's R1-class trams were built by Commonwealth Engineering Co. and were delivered between September 1950 and September 1953. Initially, the order was placed for 250 cars but last 150 cars were cancelled after many parts were delivered. Post-war cars differed from pre-war R1s in the minor details, the most noticeable was design of the motorman's window. Post-war R1s were assigned to different depots, serving Sydney and north Sydney workings. This batch of 100 cars enabled withdrawal of N, LP and K-type cars. Car 2018 was most unhappy member of the class: it was very badly damaged by fire on it's first day in traffic in May 1952 (it hit a tanker) and was subsequently scrapped after a service life of only 5 1/2 hours. The workshops manager wanted to rebuild the car and import a set of PCC trucks like Melbourne had done with 980. The only body difference was to have been the upper window sash, these fixed windows were to be replaced by rubber mounted windows just to make the car look different. He never received approval and the car was scrapped (information via Greg King). Last Sydney tram on 25th February 1961 was R1-class car 1995. Car 2044 from post-war series is preserved at the Sydney Tramway Museum.

156a Last five cars of R-class (1933-1937 series) were built without two centre internal bulkheads and with only one centre door and enabled seating for 56. Car 1933 entered service in May 1935 and order for 50 cars of this type (called R1) was placed with altered window spacing and shorter drop centre section. They were built by Clyde Engineering Co. in 1935/36. The pre-war R1s were allocated to Rushcutters Bay depot and their regular working was on the Watsons Bay Line. Three pre-war R1s were preserved: 1951,1971 and 1979, all at the Sydney Tramway Museum.
