Special offer from St.-Petersburg Tram Collection
With new LM-68 PCC model we consider the very interesting period
in the Leningrad tram history. In late 1960s and in the early 1970s the
system was in its best glory with all types of the rolling stock in service.
All our old Leningrad models are out of production, but we have a few
of the LM-49/LP-49 cars (Ref.1) and LM-33/LP-33 cars (Ref.2)
which could be completely refurbished and painted in the post-1972
colors on special request.
1933 Leningrad LM-33
Motor Car with LP-33 Trailer Car (post'72 Red & Cream livery).
In
November 1972 a new paint schemes were intoduced in Leningrad for all
types of the rolling stock. Since 1951, the LM-33/LP-33 cars were allocated
to the depots 1,3 and 8 and the cars of the first two depots were repainted
in the red & cream livery, while cars of the depot 8 received a blue-green
& cream livery. In these liveries the "American" cars served
Leningrad until 14 March 1979, in latest years used mainly on routes 9,
14,28 and 51.

1949 Leningrad LM-49
Motor Car with LP-49 Trailer Car (post'72 livery).
After
1972, the LM-49/LP-49 cars were painted in the red & cream (depots
2,4 and 5) or blue-green & cream (depots 7 and 9) liveries.

1949 Leningrad
LM-49 Motor Car with LP-49 Trailer Car
The
first tram with monocoque steed body in Leningrad was LM/LP 49 in 1949.
These trams set new standards for the Leningrad tram fleet - standards
which were pursued in the new trams built for the town thereafter. These
impressive vehicles remained in service until 1983. 287 Powers cars were
built between 1949 and 1960 and 268 Trailers were built between 1949 and
1968.

1933 Leningrad LM-33
Motor Car with LP-33 Trailer Car
History
seems to give the LM33/LP33 (initial names MA and PA, based on the USA
Peter Witt cars, known also as an "American") premier place
in the ranking of Leningrad most famous models. 226 power cars and trailers
were built between 1933 and 1940 in the Municipality's own workshop and
survived in service until March 18, 1979.

1933 Leningrad MS-4
Motor Car with MS Trailer Car
By
30s the entire fleet had been replaced by 865 MS-class power cars and
more than 900 trailers. These vehicles were supplied by Putilovsky plant.
343 MS4 power cars were built in 1933. The last MS4 operated in 1968 and
so far used as a service car.

1948 Leningrad ZIS-8
Tower Bus (Overhead Repairs)
Part
of any tram and trolleybus operation is the tower wagon. This bus started
life as a standard ZIS 8 city bus and was to rebodied as a tower wagon
in 1948.

1947 Leningrad LM-47
Motor Car with LP 47 Trailer Car
Between
1947 and 1949 new tramcars with modern design and metal bodies were constructed
on the base of the LM/LP 33 cars which had suffered during the war. These
cars were classified as LM 47 and LP 47. These trams were heavy and inconvenient
to operate. Despite of this, the last of the class were withdrawn in 1973
and a couple were converted to use as works cars.

1933 Leningrad MM Motor
Car with 1931 PM Trailer Car
In
1933 eleven MM bogie power car of Moscow type, numbered 4001-4012, were
acquired from Sormovo plant. The cars were only four years old when sold
to Gorky. 80 trailer cars of the PM class of Moscow type were obtained
in 1931 and seven more at the end of 1940.

1937 Leningrad LM-37
Motor Car with LP-37 Trailer Car
This
train was built in 1936/37 by Municipality’s workshop and was based on
“American” Peter Witt cars. It had a steel body with wide centre-entrance
door. These cars were equipped with new comfortable leather seats while
“American” cars were built with wood-slat seats. The cars, numbered 4501
and 4502, were so-called a “Blue Express” for its unusual for Leningrad‘s
fleet blue painting. This train was very popular in the city but after
the World War 2 was repainted and sold to Gorky.

1925 Leningrad GM Motor
Service Car with GP 10 Trailer Car
These
40 Power works cars, numbered 11-50, and 100 trailer works cars, numbered
1-100, were built by Putilovsky plant in two batches between 1925 and
1926. Some of the class so far remain in service.

1958 Leningrad LM 57
Tramcar
In
1956-1957 a few designes of the new Leningrad’s tramcar were prepared
by the municipality’s workshop; most of its features were later incorporated
into the production-model LM57. No. 5001, the first serial LM57,was delivered
to the city in 1957. In 1958 five LM57s were built but only No.5003 had
a styling similar to No.5001; new “standard” model was quite different
from prototypes that had gone before. At total, 711 tramcars were built
between 1957 and 1969; more than 100 LM57s were delivered to other Soviet
cities. This class, so-called “Dandy” for its attractive exterior and
very bright painting, was very popular in Leningrad. In 1986 the last
of the LM57s were officially withdrawn.

1907 St.-Petersburg
Brush Power Car (1st St.-Petersburg Tramcar)
The
first St.-Petersburg's tramcars were a batch of 197, delivered by the
famous British company Brush between 1907 and 1908. These 24-seat cars
remained in service until 1930s.

MP Motor Car with 1927 PSH Open Trailer Car
In
1908 the second batch of Leningrad's trams was built in Russia. These
cars were classified as MP and the class was destined to remain in service
until 40s. In 1927 15 unusual open trailer cars were built in by one of
the depots. These cars were slightly wider than the normal Leningrad's
trams. PSH class of the trailer cars were destined to have a relatively
short life, being withdrawn in 1932.

1933 Leningrad MO Motor
Car with PO Trailer Car
The
MO Power Car and PO Trailer Car, numbered 1523 and 869, were delivered
to the city in 1933 and were built in the Municipality's own workshop.
This tramcar looked like a little "American"LM/LP 33 cars and
would be withdrawn in the 50s.

1975 Leningrad LM 68M
Power Car
In
1973, following a period of considerable modernization and improvement
on Leningrad's tram routes, the first of a new batch of a modern LM68M
power car emerged. 2073 tramcars were built for Leningrad between 1973
and 1989. Now the majority of these trams remain in service as a single
power cars or two and three car sets.

1880s St.-Petersburg
Steam Tram
First
steam tram in St.-Petersburg was inaugurated in 1880 and regular service
began in 1884-1886 on two routes a total of some 18 km in all. These routes
were replaced by electric tramcars between 1914 and 1922.

1950 Leningrad LS3 Snow
Sweeper
First
snow sweeper, classified S-1, arrived in Leningrad in 1925 from USA. It
was built by McGuire company for standard Russian gauge of 1524 mm. S-1
was followed by an S2 model which was very similar in design to McGuire’s
model. In 1950 a batch of almost 20 LS-3 vehicles was built in the Municipality’s
workshop. Despite the appearance of the first new snow sweepers in the
mid 80s, there remain some LS-3 vehicles in service.

1963 Leningrad GM 63
Motor Service Car
By
1963 of the surviving works cars, the newest cars had been delivered in
1926 and were 37 years old. New works cars classified as GM 63 were manufactured
in the Municipality's own workshop in the same year.

1959 Leningrad Set of
two Tatra T2 PCC-type Tramcars
Although
from mid-1930s all tramcars in Leningrad were built in the municipality’s
workshop, two Tatra T2 tramcars were delivered in 1959, classified 1001
and 1003. These modern vehicles were used in set until mid-1960s.

1956/57 Leningrad LM
57 Tramcar (Prototype No.5)
In
late 1950s and early 1960s Leningrad undertook a dramatic modernization
of its tramcar fleets. The designing of the new tramcar began in a middle
1950s and some prototypes were built in 1956 and 1957. The prototype No.5
was designed at the end of 1956 and had only two sliding doors for the passengers
and separate door for the driver. In 1957 this design was replaced by prototype
No.6 with three doors. The final design has come later a same year, when
the first of LM57’s entered service, registrated 5001. They were several
specification changes from the prototypes, include different bodywork etc.
The panels of the body and the roof were made of aluminum. Serial tramcars
were similar in general layout but had some changes of styling.

1993 St.-Petersburg
LVS8-1-93 Articulated Tramcar
Only
one such tram (No. 3280) was built in 1993 for use on the one of busiest
routes No.61 in the northern part of the city. This tram can carry 320
passengers.

1908 St.-Petersburg
MP Motor Car with PD Trailer Car
First
tram route No.4 with 13 electric cars was opened in Leningrad on 16th
September 1907, and at the end of the year there were 106 cars in the
city. Very soon 100 additional power cars were ordered in Russia. This
class, classified later MP, was delivered in November 1908 when there
were 9 routes in operation. Also, by November 1908 there were 115 trailers
in the city, 65 of them were rebuilt from horse trams and 50, later known
as PD-class, were built by Putilovsky plant in Leningrad.
