Market Street Railway Co. St.-Louis Car Co. 407-410 series One-Man car
(ex-ESL&SRCo. acq. in 1936).
In
March 1935, one man cars were placed in service by San Francisco Market
Street Railway Co. on line 36-Folsom St. and later one-man service was
introduced on five more lines. To furnish equipment for these lines, 47
two man cars were converted to one-man operation and a number of used
one-man cars were purchased. In 1936 four cars were purchased from the
East St.Louis & Suburban Railway Co. They were built in 1924 by St.Louis
Car Co. and they were very similar to modern cars of 900-series, built
for Milwaukee, WI. These cars were numbered 407-410 and were modified
by Elkton Shops for use in San Francisco. The 407-410 series cars used
on lines 35-Howard St. and 36-Folsom St. until 1939, when one-man service
was discontinued. All were scrpapped at Elkton Shops during September
and October 1941.
