1979 Melbourne Comeng Z3-class Tramcar (116-230
series)
Melbournes tram system began operations in 1885 and
first electric tram line was opened in 1889. In the 70s a new program
of the purchase of the new trams was started and first Melbournes
new tram for 20 years arrived in 1975. This was a Z-class, based on prototype
tram No. 1041 and on the Gothenburg (Sweden) M28-class tram. One hundred
trams (Nos.1-100) were built between 1975 and 1979 and also 15 cars of
Z2-class were delivered in 1979. One of the main problems of Z and Z2
class trams was the door arrangement with front entrance door and rear
exit. To resolve this problem a new class, called Z3 was delivered between
1979 and 1984 (115 cars at total; numbered 116-230); in this case with
exit door in the middle of the tram. As a result of a success of Z class,
more modern trams were ordered in 1980s (A and B-classes).
