Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu) 3400/2400-series Car.
In 1936, prior to the Pan-Pacific
Peace Exposition, which held in Nagoya between March and May 1937, the
Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu) ordered three streamlined two-car sets from
Nippon Sharyo company. In February-March 1937 all three sets were delivered,
numbered 3401-3403 (motor cars) and 2401-2403 (control trailers). They
were one of the most modern Japanese cars of the time, having streamlined
bodies with full skirting, cross seats (first used by Meitetsu), automatic
acceleration system and regenerative braking (removed in 1957). Four 150
h.p. motors were fitted and the speed was more than 100 km/h. The new
two-tone green paint scheme was applied. New cars were placed in service
on the eastern part of the former Aichi Railroad between Jingumae (Nagoya)
and Yoshida (Toyohashi) and were very popular, known as "potato insect".
After the war, in 1950 Nagoya Railroad ordered 3 motorized trailers (numbered
3451-3453) from Nippon Sharyo and 3-car sets were formed. Finally, in
1953, three trailers, numbered 2451-2453 were delivered and starting from
1953 four-car sets were used. They were heavy modernized during their
service life; in 1992 the sole remaining set 3401(ex-3403)/2401 was repainted
to original two-tone green colors. In September 2001 it was withdrawn
from service and in August 2002 made its last ran.
