Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu) Nippon Sharyo 510-series Interurban Car (post'88
version).
The
Nagoya Tetsudo, known as Japan as Meitetsu, operates a 1.067 mm gauge
rail network in the Nagoya region as well as a tram system in Gifu city,
which is situated 30 km north of Nagoya. The system began operation in
February 1911 with the opening an 24.9 km interurban line from the centre
of the Gifu to Mino, known as "Mino Denki Kido" line. The Meitetsu
took over the Mino line in 1934. In March 1926 the Nippon Sharyo company
built five heavy semi-steel bogie interurban cars for Mino line, numbered
511-515. These cars close resembled the American interurban car school,
having the nice side oval windows windows. Starting from 1967 these cars
were used on the Ibi interurban line. The cars were extensive modified
at late 60s, with powerful motors, HL controls and pantograph conversions.
The old green and light cream paint scheme was changed in 1968 to very
attractive Meitetsu red and white colors. In the 1980s the cars were painted
out in the solid red color, as all other Meitetsu equipment, but this
paint scheme was't very popular and classic colors were restored soon.
In 1987/88 new cars of 770-series arrived and cars 511 and 515 were withdrawn
in 1988. However, the remaining three cars (512, 513 and 514) were still
in operation until October 2001. At the last days of operation, (on 30th
September and 1st October, 2001) all three cars were used in three-car
set (first time since 1988). Car 512 was preserved at the Mino station
(together with the dual-voltage car 601).
