England1931 Metropolitan Electric Tramways Type UCC Feltham 319, 321-329, 332-375 series

In 1929 two prototypes of the new modern trams, numbered 320 and 330 were delivered to London's Metropolitan Electric Tramways (MET), a subsidary of the Undeground Group. They were built by Union Construction Company of Feltham, Middlesex. They were the prototypes for the new class of the most modern London trams, called UCC or "Felthams". In August 1930 an order was placed to UCC for 100 new trams, 54 for Metropolitan and 46 for another Underground Group subsidary, London United Tramways (LUT). The bodies were constructed at Feltham and taken to LUT Fulwell depot where the trucks and electrical equipment were fitted. First MET Felthams entered service on 1 February 1931 on route 40 and Feltham was delivered on 29 October 1931. The whole class was numbered 319, 321-329 and 332-375. The Felthams also operated on routes 21 and 29, in conjunction with LCC cars, so all cars were fitted with body mounted plough carriers. The MET cars were allocated to Finchley and Wood Green depots and were painted in Underground Group red and broken white colors.

England1931 London Transport Class UCC Feltham - 1946-49 livery

Between 1936 and 1938 all London Transport Felthams were allocated to the Telford Avenue and Brixton Hill depots, serving South London routes at Tooting, Streatham, Purley and Brixton. At this time the route stencils were replaced by destination blinds and quick release air brakes were installed. During World War 2 two Felthams (Nos. 2109 and 2113) were destroyed as a result of enemy action. After the war London Transport had announced that the remainder of the trams were to be replaced by diesel buses instead of trolleybuses, however the 102-mile reminder of the tram system lasted until 1950 when the "Operation Tramaway" was announced. In the post-war years all Felthams retained the headlamp masks which had been fitted upon outbreak the war.

In September 1949, Feltham No. 2099 was sent to Leeds for trial and soon many Felthams were prepared for their journey to Leeds.
