Cairo Transport Authority St.Louis Car Co. PCC (ex-Los Angeles, 1000-series,
acquired in 1965).
The sale of Los
Angeles PCC cars to Cairo, Egypt was announced by the Southern California
Rapid Transit District in June 1965 after PCC 3107 had been sent to Cairo
for trials. The value of the contract was $321,000 including 134 cars,
spare parts and shipping charges. The Los Angeles PCC were in fine condition
thanks to the superb maintenance, so it was a real good deal for Cairo
Transport Authority, which used large fleet of different Belgium and local
built trams at that time. At total, 65 cars of 1937/38 batch went to Cairo.
In Cairo they were numbered into 1000-series, approx. 22 from 134 sold
cars were used for spare parts in Cairo and never saw the regular service.
The cars were shipped to Cairo in the MTA livery and they were repainted
to green and cream colors in the CTA workshops. As the years wore on,
the Cairo cars took on an increasingly battered appearance, however last
of them remained in active service until 1981. In late 1970s, they were
used on routes 1 (Abbasia circle route), 8 (Shourbra El Mezallat circle
route), 22 (Abbasia - Saida Zeinab) and 24 (Zahir Square - Saida Zeinab).
In 1970 Cairo joined Sarajevo as the only operators of both American and
Czech PCC when first of the Tatra K5 articulated cars arrived.
