1955 Cleveland Transit System St.Louis Car Co. "Bluebird"
Rapid Transit Car (Job 1775; 101-112 series).
In October 1949 the 13.16 mile rapid transit project for
Cleveland was approved and the groundbreaking was started in February
1952. To open the system, CTS ordered 56 single-end units (201-256 series)
coupled as married pairs and 12 double-end cars (101-112 series) which
would be operated on weekends and during the evening hours using on-board
fare collection. The order was placed with St.Louis Car Co. in May 1952
(Job 1775 for double-end cars), initially the CTS planned to allocated
numbers 57-68 to these cars, but they were changed to 101-112 during construction.
These rapid transit cars were known as PCC cars, however the royalties
to the Transit Research Corp. were not paid. The 7.8 mile East side line
between downtown and Windermere was opened to revenue service on March
15, 1955 and the West side branch to West 117th was opened on August 15,
1955. The new cars were known as "Bluebird" because of the paint
scheme. In 1958 twenty additional cars were added to the roster (6 double-ended
cars 113-118 and 14 single-end cars 257-270) for a one-station extension
to West Park. The Bluebirds remained in service until early 80s, five
double-end cars retained by RTA.
