Chicago Transit Authority Pullman-Standard 2001-2180 series Rapid Transit
Car
In
1964 Chicago Transit Authority received 180 new rapid transit cars from
Pullman-Standard and numbered them 2001-2180. These "New Look"
cars had a fiberglass front end which allowed the designers to create
the unique look for the end of the car; large picture windows were also
incorporated. The aluminum was also widely used. New CTA-1 trucks, a join
effort of CTA and LFM Manufacturing Company, were installed and the General
Electric SCM-type propulsion control was a result of the several years
of tests on cars 6129-6130. 100 h.p. motors and 28" diameter wheels
were used, giving the high performance characteristics to these cars.
The interior used light colors with light blue seats; air conditioning
was installed. This series of cars introduced the Mint Green and Alpine
White livery to Chicago's Rapid Transit. Starting from 1972, the series
adopted a new Platinum/Black livery; a few were painted in the Bicentennial
scheme and later they were painted in red, white and blue "Spirit
of Chicago" scheme. Last of the 2000-series cars were retired by
the beginning of 1994; cars 2153-2154 were preserved at the Illinois Railway
Museum.

- post'72 Platinum & Black livery
In
1972 cars 2053 and 2054 were repainted in the new Platinum & Black
paint scheme to de-emphasize the different window heights of the 2000-
and 2200-series cars when mixed together in the same train and soon all
Pullman cars received this new livery, except cars 2029-2030 which continued
to ran in old Mint Green and Alpine White.

CTA Chicago St.Louis Car PCC Rapid transit Car (6001-6130 series)
Chicago
Transit Authority ordered 200 PCC Rapid Transit Cars from St.-Louis Car
Co for $7.85 million and first batch, numbered 6001-6130 was delivered
in 1950 and 1951. Only these cars had the Mercury Green stripe around
the standee windows and twin headlights below the front windows. The remaining
70 cars were delivered also in 1951. The 6000s entered service in October
1950 on the Logan Sq.-Loop route. 28-inch instead of 25-inch wheels were
used on Clark B-2 trucks and the control was a higher-capacity Westinghouse
accelerator, adapted from surface car experience. First 200 cars were
very successful and CTA started a program of converting its postwar
PCC streetcars into rapid transit cars. Between 1953 and 1960 570 “Green
Hornets” were reincarnated as subway-elevating rolling stock.
Available also on order:
- Ref.164-1: post'56 simplified livery with Mercury
green roof and orange belt-rail.
- Ref.164-2: post'65 Mint Green/Alpine White livery.
