Belgium - Vicinal (SNCV/NMVB) - Type S/N Cars

The Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Vicinaux (SNCV) or Nationale Maatschappij van Buurtspoorwegen (NMVB) in Flemish, was officially created in July 1885 and in the years thereafter constructed a massive network of light railways all around the Belgium. It was a state-sponsored monopoly that eventually controlled the largest single tram system in the world, with almost 4,800 km of track in 1940. After the World War II the rolling stock modernization program was started, initially with construction of new N-type cars, intended for urban service mainly in Brussels area. At this time the most of the old Vicinal "Standard" wooden cars were showing signs of the body wear and the company decided to replace them by four-motor cars, with bodies similar to Type N, but built from the bodies and electrical equipment of the old "Standard" cars, which were built in late 20s and 30s. The first of the new "Standard" interurban cars, 9674 was put in service in July 1953 in Leuven group of routes; in December of the same year two more cars were produced, 41003 for Leuven and 41004 for Liege, however they were "new" built cars. The mass serial production was started in 1954 and until 1959 193 old cars were rebuilt, plus 7 cars were built new (they were incorporated in the 41003-41007 and 41010-41011 series). Also, ten former N-type cars (10490-10499) were rebuilt in 1962 to S-type specification, so the whole S class consisted of 210 cars. All cars were double-ended, except for SO-type cars built for coastal routes, they were also wider than S/SE types: 2.40 m instead of 2.32 m.

Belgium 1954/59 SNCV/NMVB "Standard" (Type S) Tram (Hainaut Group of routes - Charleroi)

199-3Between 1954 and 1959, sixty-nine S-type interurban cars were delivered to the large SNCV group in the Hainaut. The most modern rolling stock was used in the Charleroi area - PCC cars were used for urban routes and S-type cars for interurban routes; very interesting was route 90 with magnificient ride along the whole spine of Hainaut province. The S-type cars in the Hainaut had the grey roof instead of regular tan. The SNCV's "Standards" had a long life in the Charleroi, 43 cars were modified for use in the semi-metro system and 18 cars were rebuilt by Jumet company in 80s, known as "SJ" cars.

Belgium 1954/55 SNCV/NMVB Type N Trailer (Liege Group of routes; 19589-19591 series).

199-6Only a very few new trailers were built by SNCV to match their new S and N types as the company already had a large fleet of trailers of that time. However, four trailers were built for Antwerp group (19577-19580 series) in 1953/54 and three trailers were built for Liege group in 1954/55. They were numbered 19589-19591 and had no route blinds. The N-type trailers were sold to Gijon, Spain when SCNV service in Liege area was abandoned.

Belgium 1949/1958 SNCV/NMVB Type N Tram (Brabant Group of routes - Brussels area; 10420-10485 series)

199aIn 1941 the Cureghem works built a new car 10330 for urban service in Brussels. Until 1946, five lightweight cars (10330-10334) were built, known as "pre-N"; one of the most unusual feautures of these cars was the use of the two underslung frame-mounted traction motors, with cardan shaft drive to outer axles of each truck. In 1948/49 four more pre-N cars were built, numbered 10334-10339, and in April 1949 the SNCV placed the order to Cureghem for first production cars. At total, sixty-five cars of "Type N" were built for Brussels until 1954. Car 10485 was built in 1958 and it was shown at the Brussels World Exhibition. As SE-type cars, it had a luxurios interior and Kiepe controllers. As built, car 10484 received a modified version of the trucks, and in later years, the old trucks on all N-type cars were replaced by new onces. To reduce operating costs, cars 10472-10483 and 10485 were rebuilt in 1964 as one-man cars.

Belgium 1953 SNCV/NMVB Type N Tram (Brabant group of routes; Brussels - Leuven route; 10490-10499 series)

199a-1The "Type N" cars were designed for use on the urban routes, however cars 10490-10499 were built in 1953 for use on the interurban route Brussels-Leuven; they were fitted with pantographs and they were very successful. They had the front entrance, similar to PCC cars used on this route. When Brussels-Leuven service ended in March 1962, these cars were rebuilt as "S-type" and sent to Charleroi area.
