Belgium1951/58 Brussels La Brugeoise PCC ( 7001-7155 series )

ref149.gif (17737 bytes)The new PCC body style was designed by La Brugeoise on Brussels behalf and in 1949 tram No.5018 originally built in 1935 was rebuilt as the prototype for new Brussels PCC fleet. Deliveries were started in 1951 and by 1953 the whole batch of 50 cars were in regular service. New cars were very popular and Brussels has ordered 30 PCCs for delivery in 1956 and 75 more in 1957/8. This latest order employed trucks, electrical equipment and other components salvaged from Kansas City PCCs 501-585. In 1970-71 16 additional PCCs were built for Brussels, this time using components salvaged from Johnstown PCCs. At total, between 1951 and 1971, Brussels received 172 PCCs (171 built originally for city and Hamburg demonstrator, purchased in 1957). During 70s the trolley poles were replaced by pantographs and all cars by 1978 were converted to one-man operation. Many of these cars are still remain in service in Brussels now.
