Chicago, Aurora & Elgin RR Cincinnati Car Co. 420-434 series Interurban
Car (1938-late 40s paint scheme).
The
new management of the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Railroad - a famous Chicago
interurban connecting the city of Chicago with a Fox River Valley via
the city of the Wheaton - decided to modernize its fleet in 1922 and the
first order was placed to Pullman-Standard for twenty heavy steel interurbans.
For second group of steel cars CA&E went to Cincinnati Car Co. and
in 1927 fifteen cars, numbered 420-434 were put in service. These cars
had four GE254 motors, 140 h.p. each. This batch was rebuilt in late 40s
and remained in service until the end of passenger operation in July 1957.
The freight service was ended in July 1959.

Car (1927-34 paint scheme).
All
fifteen cars were painted out by Cincinnati Car Co. in CA&E maroon
color with gold and black striping with tan roof. This paint scheme remained
until 1934.

Car (1934-38 paint scheme).
In
1934 the cars of 420-434 series were repainted in modified scheme with
cream addition and gold and black striping was omitted. This paint scheme
remained until 1938, when cars were repainted in very attractive combination
of dark blue, light blue-gray and red.

Car (as modernized; late 40s -early 50s paint scheme).
In
late 40s all cars of 420-434 series were modernized; the splice plates
along side sheets were replaced by flush-welded joints, the roof walk
boards were also rebuilt. After modernization, the cars were painted out
with simplified variation of the 1938 paint scheme (without light blue-gray
stripe on the bottom of the sides).

Starting from early 50s, the cars of 420-434 series were painted out in
five and last paint scheme of red and light blue-gray which remained until
end of passenger operation in 1957.
